The Rigveda consists of 1028 hymns, made up of verses that vary from just one to fifty-eight. The total number of verses is 10,462.
The Rigveda derives its name from these verses: the Sanskrit word for verse is ‘rik’. This, in combination ‘veda’, with the Sanskrit word for knowledge, gives us ‘rigveda’, which is then, quite literally, ‘knowledge in verses.’
