In the last decade or so, translation of Indian literature into English has gained prominence, within India as well as abroad. The award of the International Booker to Daisy Rockwell for her English translation, Tomb of Sand, of Geetanjali Shree’s Hindi novel Ret Samadhi is significant for Indian writing on the world literary stage.
UNDERSTANDING THE ART OF TRANSLATION: TBR TALKS
Last month, I was invited by The Bangalore Review (TBR) to take part in a conversation with translators Bhaswati Ghosh, Fehmida Zakeer and Sukrita Paul Kumar on the art of translation, as well as its current state and status in India. The discussion was moderated by Maitreyee Bhattacharjee Chowdhury, Managing Editor of TBR.
We spoke of many things — the joys and griefs of translation, its ups and downs, and our personal journeys along this exciting and often rocky path. It was a privilege and a delight to be in such learned company.
