Dear Readers,
As I write this post, only a few hours remain of 2024. It has been a strange year, of contradictions, oppositions, bleakness, and hope. War, flood, and fires have been too much in the news. Palestine, climate change, whaling licences, the triumph of prejudice and bigotry around the world… I can’t even begin to list all the heartbreak this year has brought to the world. But then I remember the stories of courage and kindness, compassion and hope I have heard. People young and old, men, women, children working tirelessly to save and restore our world, stanching wounds and healing hearts.
At a personal level, I have had my share of worries this year. But then, I have had more than my share of joy—with my daughters, my family, my friends. And, at long last, after the long sleep of Covid, my writing has woken up again! The year gave me two new book contracts, on subjects dear to my heart, with an editor I am honoured and delighted to work with, and an Arts Council grant to expand develop my creative practice! (WATCH THIS SPACE FOR UPDATES IN THE NEW YEAR!!).
And then there is Fish, and all of you, my beloved community of readers. As I sat down to write this post, I began looking through all the discussions we’ve had here, and all your contributions and comments through the three years that I have been writing Fish. Thank you, all, for the time you have spent reading the posts, and writing in, messaging, and even calling to share your opinions and suggestions. I am truly touched.
As we roll into the new year, I invite you once again, to make this space your own. What aspects of India’s literary heritage would you like to explore here? Is there any work of literature you especially want to discuss or learn about? Write in with your suggestions, questions, and requests. I always love hearing from you.
Meanwhile, for your reading pleasure, I give below, in no particular order, some of the posts you’ve liked best over the years. (Some of these posts were initially paywalled; they are now accessible to all subscribers). Happy reading and a very happy 2025! Fish will return in the new year!
With my warmest regards,
Rohini
